How to Care for Your Solid Wood Furniture

How to Care for Your Solid Wood Furniture

It’s becoming increasingly popular to invest in good quality, stylish, solid wood furniture. Spending more on your furniture often means it’ll stand the test of time, but only if the wood is properly cared for throughout its life. Here are a few simple tips that outline how you can care for and prolong the life of your timeless, classic wood furniture.

Keep Your Furniture Out of Direct Sunlight

The temperature of the hot summer sun has the ability to fade and ultimately destroy fine finishes that are present on solid wood furniture. It can cause the wood to dry out, which will subsequently shrink it, allowing cracks to occur. Keep the furniture out of especially cold and damp environments and situate them away from large windows.

Use Coasters, Placemats And Tablecloths

If you have a solid wood dining table, for example, it’s most likely used every single day. Keep those surfaces covered where possible. Place cups on coasters, hot plates on placemats and lay a durable tablecloth down if you have small children who enjoy doing crafts. Once you’ve finished using the surface, simply clear away the tablecloth, placemats or coasters to reveal the beautiful natural wood underneath, ready to be admired once again.

Ensure Your Furniture Is Away From Electric Heaters and Vents

Much like the detrimental effects of the summer sun, heat can dry out and shrink the wood which will ultimately cause cracks. If there’s a room in your house which is particularly warm, use a humidifier to help replace the lost moisture.
